Feeding Fish in the Summer

Ponds

Fish feeding is an important subject for pond owners.  It is very easy to overfeed fish due to the fact that is very fun to watch them come to the surface to eat the food and because kids really get a kick out of it.  However overfeeding, or rather putting too much food in the pond than the fish can eat, is a recipe for water problems.  Especially in the summer.  Uneaten food will eventually sink to the bottom where it will become a food source for algae and also contribute to the much layer.  The rule of thumb to follow when feeding fish is to only give them as much food as they can consume in a 5 minute period.  When water is in the mid 50s to low 70s, mutliple feedings a day are usually OK as fish are very active at these water temps.  In the summer when the water gets warm, the fish tend to slow down and not eat as often so you may find it beneficial to cut the feedings back.

It is also important to feed a high quality diet.  Fish are sensitive to vital nutrients like protein, fats, minerals, carbohydrates and so on.  Ultra Balance All Season Koi food is an excellent spring and summer food as it is highly digestible and full of vital minerals and nutrients.  In the extreme summer, it is advised that feedings take place in the early morning before the day gets to hot.  This will the most comfortable time for them to eat and also help conserve vital oxygen that will be needed throughout the rest of the day.
