It is very important when cleaning your filter media that you only rinse the media out with pond water and not tap water.  This is because the chemicals in tap water can kill or disturb the beneficial bacteria that is growing on the filter media.  All that is really needy is to pour pond water over the media pads to allow for any lodged debris te break loose.  Do not scrub or do any other activity that could be harmful to the bacteria.  It can take weeks for the bacteria to colonize in the filter if they are disturbed, which can spell problems for your pond.
