Was just reading an article in Water Garden News on how chloramine usage in city water is on the rise and how pond owners need to be aware. If you dont know, chloramine is the combination of chlorine and ammonia and is toxic to fish, but is used as a disinfectant in for public drinking water. In a nutshell, chloramines in pond water will bind to the iron in the fish’s blood cells preventing oxygen from being carried and eventually suffocating the fish. If a pond owner uses city water in their pond, they want to check with their muniipality to see if chloramines are used. Fortunately there are products in the market place that are used to treat water to protect fish from toxins. These various water conditioners or dechlorinators will remove chlorine and chloramines, while also reducing ammonia. These products as a must for new ponds and water changes.
